John Arthur Burgess, 66, of Colonial Heights, VA, died Friday, September 23, 2016. Born in Petersburg, VA, he was the son of the late Willis C. Burgess, Sr. and Evangeline Pettijohn Burgess. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Willis C. Burgess, Jr. John served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and retired from DuPont after 30 years of service. He was a member of American Legion Post 284 and Post 2, Hopewell Moose Lodge 1472, Fraternal Order of Eagles 882, and VFW Post 637. He enjoyed metal detecting on the beach and loved spending time with his dogs. John is survived by his wife of 32 years, Mary Margaret Branton Burgess; brother, William Burgess, Sr. and wife, Connie, of New Hampshire; sister, Sandra Burgess Dupuy of Midlothian, VA, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at the Petersburg Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Blandford Cemetery.
