John William Elmore Sr., 88, of Dinwiddie, went to be with the Lord Friday, November 14th. He was the son of the late Sydnor Robinson Elmore Sr. and Annie Lee (Gray) Elmore. He was also preceded in death by his son John William Elmore Jr., three brothers Sydnor Robinson Elmore Jr., Warren Marshall Elmore, Randolph Madison Elmore and a sister Margaret Lee (Elmore) Kozak. He is survived by his wife, Doris Mae (Wells) Elmore, his children, Robert Franklin Elmore and wife Pamela, Timothy Lee Elmore Sr. and wife Carin, Susan Annette (Elmore) Brooks and husband Wayne, and his sister, Jean Bolling (Elmore) Bradshaw. There are many grandchildren, Jon, Chastity, Timothy and William, and great-grandchildren, Madison, Alexander, Emma, Gavin, Allyson, Abby, Ava and Easton. John was born and grew up in Petersburg, Va. He served in the US Navy during WWII from 1943 to 1946 and spent time in both the Atlantic and Pacific. After his time in the Navy he married in Ocran Methodist Church and raised a family. He worked at several jobs including DuPont before settling in at Continental Can where he retired after 35 years of service. A member of Ocran United Methodist Church, John was also a member of the Sutherland Ruritan Club for 25 years and served as treasurer for 12 years. He loved to garden, fish and hunt and enjoyed all that nature had to offer. He loved spending time with family and friends and sharing his life experiences through conversation. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 18, at Ocran United Methodist Church with the Reverend Larry House officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Southlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the church.
