John “Jack” Gradwell Evans died Sunday, August 22, 2004 at Henrico Doctor’s Hospital in Richmond. Jack was born October 28, 1936, the son of the late Major General Roy Tripp Evans, Jr. and Virginia Hamilton Evans. After graduation from the United States Military Academy at West Point, Jack completed Ranger and Airborne courses at Fort Benning, Georgia. He served in the 82nd Airborne Division and as an infantry advisor in Vietnam in 1964. He returned again to Vietnam in 1969 with the 101st Airborne. Jack made many friends during and after his military career. He especially wanted to thank his friends at the Rare Olde Times and the Red Hot and Blue who provided companionship during the last stages of his illness. He is survived by his mother and step father, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph M. Reece of Petersburg and two brothers, Roy T. Evans of Richmond and Alexander H. Evans of Tampa, Florida. A graveside service for family and friends will be held in Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg at 11:00 PM Friday, August 27, 2004. Family is being served by the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home.
