John Kenneth Hammer

March 12, 1951 — January 28, 2025

John Kenneth Hammer, 73, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on March 12, 1951, in New York, to his parents, Sara and John Hammer, John grew up with a deep sense of duty, kindness, and humor. He is survived by his wife, Lisa Hammer; his children, Teresa Lee and Lauren Murden; grandson, Orion Lee; nephew, Earl Platt; sister, Donna Platt; his other sister, Gail Stroble, welcomed him into Heaven.

John dedicated his career to serving and protecting others, as a police officer, in the city of Richmond, until his well-earned retirement. Though he was a man of service, he was also a man of simple joys-spending countless hours setting up his beloved model trains, upgrading his stereo equipment, and watching the birds from his yard. He took great pride in having the best-looking lawn on the block, always greeting neighbors with a wave as he worked outside.

John was a devoted husband to Lisa Hammer, his wife of 48 years, and a proud father to his daughters, Teresa Lee and Lauren Murden. He adored his grandson, Orion Lee, who brought him endless joy. Above all, John loved his family fiercely, always making sure they felt supported, protected, and deeply loved.

His presence was larger than life, and his laugh-so uniquely his-will echo in the hearts of those who knew him. His humor was legendary, punctuated with his signature line, "I got a million of 'em," or a satisfied pat on his back after delivering a punchline. But beyond the jokes, he was a man of immense warmth, always ready with the biggest and best hug when you needed it most.

John was the best father, grandfather, husband, and friend-someone who made a lasting impact on everyone he met. His love, laughter, and unwavering presence will be missed beyond measure, but his memory will continue to bring smiles and comfort to those who knew him.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM and from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM, at the Chester Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 6, 2025, at 11:00 AM, at the funeral home. Interment at Merchants Hope Memorial Gardens will take place at a later date.
