John G. “Johnny” Hesse, Jr., age 72, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 13th, 2021. He will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend.
A true beach lover, many of John’s favorite family memories were made at Virginia Beach in their family home on 84th Street. Known as “Papa John” to his grandchildren, memories were made watching ball games and playing checkers. John was a great storyteller, always captivating those around him with tales of the past. An avid golfer, nothing made him happier than a morning tee time and a day spent golfing with friends. When asked how his golf game went, he’d heartedly reply “I beat ‘em all”.
He faithfully served his church Webber Memorial Baptist and can be remembered for cooking his “famous” BBQ. He looked forward to fishing trips with his “brother” Hart Roper, and a Sunday afternoon watching the Redskins play. John never met a stranger and was always willing to lend an ear to anyone in need.
He was born on May 17th, 1948, graduated from Thomas Dale High School, and was a lifelong resident of Chester, Virginia. John served honorably in the Army National Guard during the Vietnam War. He then spent his career working for Aleris (formerly Reynolds Metals), retiring as a Purchasing Manager.
He was preceded in death by his mother Minerva Hesse; father, John G. Hesse, Sr.; sister, brother-in-law, and nephew, Margaret “Jill”, Oliver D. “Skitch”, and Andrew “Andy” Rudy; sister and brother-in-law Helen “Betsy” and Dick Monroe.
John’s memory will be cherished by his loving wife of 29 years, Katja; children Kathleen Hesse (Chris Spain), Ashley Williams (Todd), Tim Wilson (Jennifer); grandchildren Kaitlyn, Addison, and Grayson Williams, Tyler and Jacob Wilson, Bethany Mendoza; nieces Lynn Garner (Gary) and Jamison “Jamie” Reed (Dale); nephew, Matt Marthinson (Pam); and numerous great nieces and nephews, extended family members and friends.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date in Virginia Beach on 84th street, the special place where a lifetime of memories were made. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Michael J. Fox Parkinson’s Foundation, P.O. Box 5014 Hagerstown, MD 21741-5014.
