John “Jack” Denis Figuieras, 93, of Colonial Heights, passed away on Wednesday, November 2, 2016. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife of over 58 years, Katherine Adeline Brown Figuieras; daughters, Susan Kathleen Figuieras of Chester, VA and Cherie Katherine Figuieras Givens of San Antonio, TX; grandchildren, Scott R. Robinson (Candice Chewning), Melissa J. Collier (N. Macon Collier, IV), SSG, Kyle D. Spicer (Katherine W. Spicer), Christopher J. and Eryn K. Givens; six great-grandchildren, Tyler S. Robinson, Evan C. Robinson, Addison G. Ramsey, Lucas O. Spicer, Lilly A. Collier and N. Macon Collier, V “Tate”; sister, Mrs. Catherine King of Montgomery, IL; and many nieces and nephews. Jack was preceded in death by his sister, Mrs. Clemence Houser of Crown Point, IN; and his loving and devoted miniature schanauzer, Angel. Mr. Figuieras was born in Chicago, IL on July 26, 1923 to Royal D. and Kathleen F. Figuieras. He was a World War II Veteran and a former Prisoner of War in Germany for 16 months after being captured on January 22, 1944 during the Rapido River battle near Mt. Cassino, Italy. Jack was a Corporal in Company E, 141st Infantry Regiment, Second Battalion, 36th Infantry Division, from 1943-1945, and earned the following awards: Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Achievement in Ground Operations Against the Enemy, Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster Large, Military Order of the Purple Heart Medal, Prisoner of War Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two Bronze Battle Star Attachments, World War II Victory Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, 1st Award, Honorable Service Lapel Button, World War II, Marksman Badge and Rifle Bar. He retired in 1993 with a total of 18 years as a master sheet metal mechanic in the civilian sector and over 34 years of Federal Service in the Department of the Army, US Army Subsistence Center, US Army Food Service Center, US Army Troop Support Agency and the Department of Defense, and Defense Commissary Agency. In addition to numerous awards and commendations during his years of civilian federal service, upon retirement he was awarded the Defense Commissary Agency Meritorious Civilian Service Award Medal. Remains rest at the Chester Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 6, 2016. A funeral service with Honors will be held in Arlington National Cemetery, with interment to follow that will be announced at a later date.
