John H. Lewis, 63, of Dinwiddie went home to rest on Wednesday, May 24, 2006. Born in Danville, VA he was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur S. Lewis, Sr. and Louise Evans Lewis; a brother, Wilbur S. Lewis, Jr., and a sister, Sharon L. Jones. John served his country in the VA Army National Guard as a Sgt. in field artillery for the 29th infantry division. He worked for Blazer financial services and was president of Union Finance and vice president of First Federal Savings Bank of Petersburg. He was a member of the Petersburg Lions Club for 36 years where he served as president from 1977 to 1978 and was a recipient of the Northington/Voshall Award. John was a former Chairman of Deacons at Monumental Baptist Church and was currently serving in the deacon body at Western Heights Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Linda Martin Lewis; daughters, Lynn Alvarez (Eddy), and Cindy York (Stephen); grandchildren, Elena and Gabriel Alvarez and Zachary and Owen York; sisters, Nadine L. Brown and Sandra L. Davis. As a tribute to his courage and love for life, his church, and service to his community, in lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Petersburg Lions Club, P.O. Box 1964, Petersburg, VA 23805, for a scholarship fund to be established in his honor. The family will receive friends at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home and Cremation Service on Friday, May 26, 2006 from 6-8 pm. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 27, 2006 at 11 am at Western Heights Baptist Church.
