John James McAteer, 73, of Chester, VA, passed away Wednesday, June 27, 2012. Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late John James and Emma Harscar McAteer. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve and a retired construction superintendent and master carpenter. Mr. McAteer was talented in theatre and music, and as a teenager, performed a solo at Carnegie Hall. He received his Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering Technology from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. He was an active participant in the Boy Scouts for most of his life. As a scout leader and unit commissioner, he received numerous awards and honors, to include, Life Scout, Distinguished Commissioner Award, Silver Beaver Award, District Award of Merit, and Vigil Honor â?? Order of the Arrow. He was a member of Chester Lodge No. 94 A.F & A.M., served as assistant coach for the Chesterfield Quarterback League at Henning Elementary School from 1990 to 1994, and was a proud Thomas Dale High School marching band parent. He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane; sons, Ian, Robert and Michael; daughters, Stephanie and Lisa; step-grandchildren, Taro and Tepi; step-great-grandchildren, Zoe and Yoda; aunt, Dorothy McAteer; and cousin, Joanie McAteer. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, June 30th at the Chesterfield Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service. The family will receive friends following the service.
