In Loving Memory of John Paul Mellick, Jr.
On Monday, December 11, 2023, at the age of 74, John Paul Mellick, Jr. peacefully journeyed home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. John was a man of unwavering devotion-a loving husband, a dedicated father, a loyal friend, and an active member of the Smyrna Baptist Church community.
Born on May 31, 1949, in Albia, Iowa, John spent his formative years on a farm with his parents, John Mellick, Sr. and Frances McGilvery, alongside his sister, Joyce Kent. Preceded in death by his parents, John is survived by his sister, Joyce Kent; his wife, Sherrill "Sherry" Mellick; two daughters, Tiffany Kempton and husband, Michael, and Denise Holman and husband, Stuart; and eight adoring grandchildren.
John's career was spent serving his community. He joined the U.S. Army and served with distinction in the Light Weapons Infantry and Special Forces. His commitment earned him the National Defense Service Medal and Armed Forces Reserve Medal. From 1991-1994 he served the County of Dinwiddie with distinction and integrity as the Animal Control Officer. He rounded out his career at Fort Barfoot in Range Operations as a Safety Specialist, retiring in 2014.
Beyond his professional achievements, John shared over three decades of marriage with his devoted wife, Sherry. Together, they crafted a beautiful life marked by shared passions such as traveling, gardening, reading, fishing, and farming. John took immense pride in his daughters, Tiffany and Denise, and cherished every moment spent with his growing family.
A memorial service to honor and celebrate John's life will take place at Smyrna Baptist Church, in Dinwiddie, on Friday, December 15, 2023, at 3 p.m. Following the service, friends and family are warmly invited to gather at the church for a reception--a time to share memories, offer support and find solace in each other's company. The family is being served by the Dinwiddie Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home.
May we join together to remember, celebrate, and find comfort in the enduring legacy of John Paul Mellick, Jr.
