John Alfred Mertz

John A. Mertz, 87, of Prince George, died on January 10, 2018. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Anna G. Mertz; and parents, John and Beritia Mertz. He is survived by his three children, John Mertz, David Mertz and Karen Mertz; four grandchildren, Theresa Butler, Melissa Mertz, Matthew Mertz and Jacob Mertz; two brothers, Paul Mertz and Dick Mertz; sister-in-law, Irene Hreha; and seven great-grandchildren. John was a devoted husband and father. He was a U.S. Army veteran of 20 years, having served in the Korean War. After retiring from the Army, John worked 20 years for the federal government at Fort Lee. After his retirement, he was actively involved in the VFW. John and Ann enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, and celebrating holidays where everyone was welcome in their home. A graveside service will take place at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at Virginia Veteran Cemetery, 10300 Pridesville Road, Ameila Courthouse, VA 23002. The family will receive friends at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M., Monday, January 15, 2018.
