John Woodrow Oakley, Sr., 84, of Carson, VA, passed away Sunday,
April 11, 2021, following a brief illness. Born on May 30, 1936, he was the son of the late James Bonnett and Cora Bishop Oakley. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Ruth Gayle Oakley; a brother, James Oakley, Jr.; sisters, Gladys O. Winfield, Ethel O. Harrison, Dorothy O. Remorenko and Violet O. Lewis. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a long-time member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Carson holding numerous positions within the church. He was also a charter member of Carson Volunteer Fire Department, a member of Carson Ruritan Club for over 50 years, and an avid NASCAR fan attending many races throughout the years. He was an owner of Woody’s Chevrolet, Inc. for over 20 years, working his final years at the U.S. Postal Service before retiring in 2016. He is survived by his daughters, Carolyn O. Pecht (Ronnie), Shirley O. Wilkinson (Robert) and Terry Oakley-Randolph (John), and son, John W. Oakley, Jr. (Michelle); grandchildren, Rob Wilkinson (Mary), Tara Pecht Johnson (Lin), John Blake Wilkinson, Laine Pecht (Tiffany), Britton Hughes (Katie), Brandon Hughes (C.J.), Ryan Pecht (Amanda), Bradley Hughes (Stacy), John W. Oakley, III (Becca) and Matthew Oakley; great-grandchildren, Savannah, Owen and Annabelle Johnson, Olivia, Hannah and Colton Pecht, Tripp, Charley and Chandler Pecht, Hayley, Mary Grace, Jenna and Ava Wilkinson, Garrett and Carleigh Jo Hughes, Jack and Violet Hughes, Sawyer and Baylor Hughes, and Madelyn and Jameson Oakley; sisters, Frances O. Pennington, Gale O. Titmus (Richard); sisters-in-law, Donna B. Mitchell (Billy), Janet P. Brockwell; brother-in-law Roy W. Lewis; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by a very dear friend, Marian Salmons. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 14, 2021 at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. A graveside funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 15, 2021 at the Mausoleum Chapel at Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George, VA with the Reverend Hugh Mayes officiating.
