John Paul Opocensky, 85, of Ladson, husband of Alice â??Catherineâ? Williams Opocensky, passed away Monday, April 4, 2011. Born in Prince George, VA, he was the son of Paul Opocensky and Emily Rusnack Opocensky. Mr. Opocensky served our country proudly in the United States Navy, where he retired as a Master Chief Mineman after 30 years. After retiring, he attending Lake City Community College in FL and received his degree in Golf Course Management. He then worked as a superintendant as Jeckyl Island, Georgia Golf Courses. He was also a member of the American Legion, VFW, Fleet Reserve Association, and Association of Mineman. Mr. Opocensky is survived by his wife of over 64 years, Alice â??Catherineâ? Opocensky; one son, Joe Opocensky (Ina) of Tucson, AZ; two daughters, Betty Crosby (Bannon) of Ridgeville, SC and Cheryl Gillyard (James) of Ocala, FL; one brother, Donald Opocensky (Margaret) of Hopewell, VA and one sister, Elizabeth Brockwell of Hopewell, VA. He was also survived by eight grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda May Opocensky. The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 7, 2011, 6:00-8:00 pm at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, Goose Creek Chapel, 869 St. James Ave. Funeral service will be held Friday, April 8, 2011 11:00 am, also in the Goose Creek Chapel. Burial will be on Saturday, April 9, 2011, 1:00 pm Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg, VA.
