John Theodore Prottenger, 83, loving husband, father, and grandfather, died Wednesday, February 28, 2018. John retired after 27 years of proud service in the U.S. Army including service during the Vietnam War. A selfless and generous man, John loved spending time with his family and will be remembered as a great story teller. He was preceded in death by a step-daughter, Rosa Hernandez Briggs; a son, John Prottenger, Jr.; and a brother, George Prottenger. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Nelida Espada Prottenger; daughter, Bonnie Tift; step-children, Felix Hernandez, Jr., Anibal Hernandez, and Daisy Hernandez; grandchildren, Jason Pruett and Samantha Pruett; great-granddaughter, Cecilia Belardo; and son-in-law, Spencer Briggs. A funeral service with military funeral honors will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, March 9, 2018 at Virginia Veterans Cemetery, Amelia, VA.
