On September 24, 2011, God received the soul of John D. Rochelle. John (of â??Rochelleâ? as most people called him) was born on May 1, 1921 to Claude R. & Beulah E. Vandenburg Rochelle. He proudly served in the Navy during World War II, mostly in the Pacific on the U.S.S. Phoenix. He worked for 5 yrs. At the Newport News Shipyard, 4 yrs. At Continental Can, and 29 yrs. At Allied Chemical, before retiring. He was an avid fisherman, and loved to bird hunt with his hunting dogs, Susie, Cindy, and Bootsie. He enjoyed much companionship and fun as a member of the Hopewell Moose Lodge for 40 yrs., the American Legion Post 284 for many years, and the VFW for 42 yrs. He was predeceased in death by his wife, Elizabeth Poland Rochelle, along with four brothers, Albert, Edgar, Claude, and Eugene. He is survived by his cousin, Peggy Ross, sisters-in-law, Florence Rochelle and Lois Rochelle; nieces, Patricia Snead Saul, and husband Stuart, Donna Snead Hawkins, and husband, Barry, Joanne Walls, and other nieces and nephews; along with many, many special friends whose friendship has been deeply appreciated throughout the years. The family invites his friends to a visitation that will be held at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss and Son Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday September 28, 2011 at 2:00 pm in Blandford Cemetery, to be officiated by The Rev. Stuart C. Saul. Rochelleâ??s family wishes to thank all the special people who provided him with the loving care he needed during his illness: the staff at both John Randolph Hospital and Southside Regional in particular. The family request that in lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the American Cancer Society, 4240 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, Va. 23060-3314, in Rochelleâ??s name.
