John Pegram Short, 66, born September 6, 1945, passed away Monday, November 7, 2011 at Southside Regional Medical Center after a two month struggle of declining health. He was a lifelong resident of Maxwelton Farm on Squirrel Level Road in Dinwiddie County. He was predeceased by his parents Virginia Falconer Electra Pegram Short and Dabney Eppes Short, Sr. and his infant daughter Angela Virginia Short. John graduated in 1963 from Petersburg High School; afterwards he completed a four year apprenticeship as a Machinist at Titus Machine Shop in Petersburg. He was employed at Brown & Williamson Tobacco in Petersburg, Solar Optical in Colonial Heights, and retired from Honeywell International â??Bâ? Plant in Chesterfield as a Field Machinist/Plant Carpenter. He was a member of Smithsâ?? Grove United Methodist Church and VFW of Hopewell. John served in the U.S. Army from April 19, 1966 to March 22, 1968 aboard the largest ocean going tug boat in the Korean waters. John was the master of his universe in his â??shopâ? at the farm, where he entertained, fed and solved world problems with his friends and visitors. His friends were many and faithful. Stories both large and small will live on in our minds and hearts. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Carolyn Underwood Short, his loving Yorkie â??Cocoâ?; daughter, Crystal Virginia Short; son, John Pegram â??JPâ? Short, Jr. (Jennifer Sullivan Short); grandson, John Pegram â??Jayâ? Short, III; granddaughter, Amber Rose Short; sister, Barbara S. McCants (David); brother, Dabney E. Short, Jr. (Stuart); four nephews, Dabney E. â??Deeâ? Short, III (Kim), D. Mark McCants (Siti), Greg B. Short (Arti), and Matt R. McCants (Shari); one niece, Ellen M. Selking (Joe); four great nieces and seven great nephews; sister-in-law, Betty U. Minter (Ron). Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Sunday, November 13, 2011 at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home and Cremation Service with a visitation to follow until 4 pm. Interment will be private.
