John Alonzo Simmons, 88, of South Chesterfield, passed away on Wednesday, July 1, 2015. Born in Wayne County, NC, he was the son of the late Harry J. and Leone Askew Simmons. He was also preceded in death by siblings, Margaret Mayo, Paul Simmons, Fred Simmons, and Linwood Simmons. John was a member of Blandford Lodge No.3 A.F. & A.M., Petersburg; a 50 year member of Ettrick American Legion Post 136; and longtime member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Matoaca. He was a proud Veteran in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. He later went on to work for Chesterfield County Police Department retiring as Captain after 32 years of service. John is survived by his wife, June Pond Simmons; two sons, Bruce S. Simmons (Lisa), and William “Billy” E. Simmons (Sandy); daughter, Cathy Simmons Ross (Henry); six grandchildren, Robert Shannon Simmons (Greta), Kelly Ross Adams (Justin), Michael Brandon Simmons (Sarah), Kaitlyn Michelle Simmons, Jonathan Elliot Ross, and Stephanie Leigh Simmons; six great-grandchildren, Christopher Austin Simmons, John William Simmons, Robert Simmons, Jr., Peyton Ross, Corey Adams, and Landon Adams; siblings, Joseph E. Simmons (Jackie), Thomas O. Simmons (Billie), and Harry Alfred Simmons (Velta); and numerous devoted nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, July 5, 2015 at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Monday, July 6, 2015 at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Southlawn Memorial Park.
