John Hunter Harvey Sr., age 79, of Chester, VA, passed away at his home on October 5, 2006. He was the son of the late W. Hunter Harvey, Jr. and Nellie Franklin Harvey of Spring Mills, VA. He attended the college of William and Mary and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was employed by the Trailways Bus Company as a tour agent for 20 years and later as an Internal Revenue Officer for the Federal Government from which he retired. Mr. Harvey was a charter member of the Chester Civitan Club where he served as president and numerous other offices and committees. This club was the love of his life as he devoted many hours to community services and Camp Baker. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #94 where he held the treasurerâ??s position for 19 years. He also served as a volunteer for the American Red Cross and was a Boy Scout leader for many years. Mr. Harvey was a member of Chester United Methodist church. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Cheatham Harvey; three children, John Jr. and wife Diane and four children of Hanover, VA, Mary Beth Johnson and husband Matthew and two children of Chester, and Tom Harvey and three children of Boston, MA; and a sister, Virginia Harvey Hunter of Concord, VA. The family will receive friends at the Chesterfield J.T. Morriss and Son Funeral Home and Cremation Service on Sunday, October 8, from 3 to 5 p.m., with a Masonic Rites Ceremony beginning at 5 p.m., which is open to all. Funeral services will be held on Monday, 11 a.m. at the Chester United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at 3:30 p.m. in New Concord Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Concord, VA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bon Secours Hospice Care at 5875 Bremo Rd. suite 710 Richmond, VA 23226 in memory of John Hunter Harvey, Sr. or to the Chester United Methodist Church Building Fund.
