John Robert Suyes Jr.

John Robert Suyes Jr., 85, of Hopewell died November 2, 2018. The son of the late John Robert and Ruth Alice Matthews Suyes, he was preceded in death by his sister, Faith Evangeline Longfield and his beloved dogs, Spike and Daisy. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Rose Faulkner Suyes; daughter Joanna Suyes Ogle and her husband, Jimmy, of Richmond; daughter Kathryn Suyes Carbajal and her husband, Benjamin, of Florence, SC; son John Robert Suyes III of Denver, CO; sisters Veta Marie Creggar of Prince George and Gloria Hannah Cralle of Ashland; and several nieces and nephews. He was a loving and generous father and husband and a long-time member of First Baptist Church where he served on numerous committees and was a deacon, usher, and Sunday School teacher for many years. Along with his good friend, Clint Strong, he was a founding member of the Surprise Visitation Team. Educated at the University of Richmond, he served as a chaplain’s assistant in the United States Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. For 40 years he owned floor covering businesses in Hopewell and Chester before his retirement at age 75. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Hopewell, followed immediately by a funeral service at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Darryl Boggs, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating.
