John T. “Tom” Thios, 80, of Colonial Heights, VA., went to be with the Lord and his beloved wife of 54 years, Brenda G. Jackson, Thursday, October 11, 2018.
Born in Beckley, WVA, he was the son of the late Samuel and Ida Mae (Phillips) Thios.
He is survived by his daughter, Kathy T. Batten and husband, Lee of Chester, VA; son, John T. Thios, Jr. and wife, Veronika of Dublin, CA; brother, Samuel (Sam) Thios and wife, Bobbi of Savanna, GA; four grandchildren, Kristen Stover and husband, Lawson of Richmond, VA., Amanda Altizer and husband, David of Midlothian, VA., Abigail, Jeremy and great-grandchild, Aiden.
Tom began his career in education by first graduating from Morris Harvey College (since renamed University of Charleston) with a BA degree and then Richmond Professional Institute (since renamed VCU) with a MS degree in Clinical Psychology. He later joined the faculty at Richard Bland College in 1966 to retire 32 years later as an Associate Professor of Psychology and Director of Counseling.
Tom was an avid boater, enjoying sailing in the Chesapeake Bay and surrounding waterways. He also cherished cooking, reading, dog ownership and traveling internationally with family and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 18, 2018 at J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home 3050 W. Hundred Rd., Chester, VA 23831.
