John Cyril Tomko

John Cyril Tomko, 84, of Disputanta, passed away at his home on Thursday, December 24, 2015. He was born in Disputanta on May 17, 1931, to the late John Cyrus Tomko and Annie Tomko. John was preceded in death by his loving wife, Carolyn L. Tomko and his brother David Joseph Tomko. He is survived by his son John Mark Tomko and his wife, Sharon Denmark; his daughter, Anne and her husband, Captain Edward Joseph Baron II, U.S. Navy (retired). He also leaves behind his beloved cousins Billy and Jimmy Tomko, who were like brothers to him and his friend Westin Douglas, with whom he shared many adventures. John worked for Verizon until his retirement and was a member of Prince George Lodge, Number 115 A.F. & A.M. and Newville Baptist Church. He had a lifelong passion for flying, both as a private pilot and later radio controlled airplanes. John was an excellent swimmer, loved the ocean, and enjoyed family trips to Virginia Beach. The family would like to thank Billy and Mary Frances Tomko, and Jimmy and Ann Tomko for their support and visits during John's final days. The family would also like to thank his caregivers, Lakeshia F. Coleman, Tijuana A. Hill, and Chelsea D. Meekins for their dedicated and compassionate care. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 2, 2016, at Newville Baptist Church, 7710 Beef Steak Road, Waverly. Interment will follow in the Church cemetery.
