John Phillip “JP” Vass, Jr. 84, departed this life on Monday, August 20, 2018. A native of Chesterfield, J.P. began his high school career at Manchester High School. JP completed his senior year at Fork Union Military Academy, where he competed in football, basketball, baseball and track. He served two years in the United States Navy, where he played football under the leadership of the Jack Cloud, he also played baseball while in the Navy. Following his military service, he attended the University of Richmond on a full athletic scholarship for football and baseball. JP obtained his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1961. In 1962 he began his 33 year long career with Texaco. During his career he received a multitude of awards for his service. In 1976 he was selected as one of the top salesman in the United States. Since 1970, he was a very proud Free and Accepted Mason of Chesterfield Lodge #161 and Urbana Lodge #83. He was a member of the Middlesex Lions Club, where he received the Melvin Jones Fellowship. JP was an umpire for over 40 years for both baseball and softball from the little league to the collegiate levels. He is in the little league Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. JP is survived by his three children, Linda Lynch (Keith) of Florida, John P. Vass, III (April) of Georgia and Judy Gail Burns of Virginia; grandchildren, Dalton R. Burns (Rachel), Jordan Vass, Connor Lynch (Rachael), Liam Lynch, Jacob Vass, Jessica Vass and Jonathan “JJ” Burns; great-grandchild, Madeline Lynch; sister, Faye Davis of Richmond; brother, Linwood “Kenny” Vass (Anne) of Richmond. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7pm on Thursday, August 23, at the J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, Chesterfield Chapel, 3050 W. Hundred Road, Where services will be held at 11am on Friday, August 24. Interment to follow at Dale Memorial Park.
