John Calvin Vaughan, 85, of Dinwiddie County, passed away Monday, June 16, 2014. Born in Petersburg, he was one of six children born to the late John Edward and Mary Gertrude Westmoreland Vaughan. He was also preceded in death by his wife of nearly 65 years, Kathryn Mills Vaughan. Mr. Vaughan retired from Sears after many years of service. He was an active member of Ocran United Methodist Church and enjoyed singing in the choir there. He was also a past member of the Petersburg Festival Chorus and a participant in the Senior Olympics. Mr. Vaughan was a devoted member of Ruritan for many years. He was a member and past president of the Sutherland Ruritan Club and held various positions on the club, district and national level, including National Director, and was the proud recipient of the Tom Downing Fellow award. He is survived by a daughter, Patricia Kay Lasher and husband, John of Virginia Beach; son Bruce F. Vaughan and wife, Jennifer also of Virginia Beach; grandchildren, Kathy Hersh, Jay Haugh, and John Vaughan, seven great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, June 21, at Ocran United Methodist Church with The Reverend Larry House officiating. Interment will follow at Blandford Cemetery.
