John Wilson, Jr., of Colonial Heights, Virginia died at his home on Monday, August 13, 2012, after fighting Alzheimerâ??s disease for two years. He was surrounded by family at his passing.
He was born on March 27, 1927 to the late John Wilson Sr. and Bessie Bostick of Council, Virginia. He was one of ten children.
John joined the Navy during World War II and received the American Theatre Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, as well as the Good Conduct medal. After his tour of duty with the Navy ended, he immediately enlisted in the Army.
Before retiring, John was a career-military soldier and held the rank of Sergeant Major. While spending thirty years in the military service, he acquired many accolades. Those commendations included: Good Conduct Medal 7th Award, Meritorious Service Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Combat Infantryman Badge 2nd Award, Korean Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army of Occupation Medal Japan, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation Badge, American Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with 30 Oak Leaf Clusters, Drill Sergeant Badge, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal Korea, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm 2nd Degree (Silver) Award, Bronze Star Medal with 10 Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Medal with 20 Oak Leaf Clusters, Vietnam Campaign Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Civil Actions Medal 1st Class with 10 Oak Leaf Clusters. He also received the Purple Heart Award.
John is survived by his wife of 58 years, Velma Jeanette and was preceded in death by his daughter and son in law, Karen and Archie Morris (Michael). He is also survived by his children and grandchildren: Wanda and George Miller (Angela, Melissa and Lauren), John Wilson III (Harris), Kimberly and Steve Meadows (Joshua, Tyler and Lindsay), Wendy and Rick Bryant (Kendall), and Terry Wilson.
The family will receive visitors on Wednesday, August 15, 2012, from 2pm - 5pm at JT Morris Funeral Home in Chester, Virginia.
