RUSSELL LEE â??JOHNNIEâ? WESTBROOK, age 87, a lifelong resident of Waverly, died Monday May 21, 2007, at his homeplace where he was born on Feb. 13, 1920. He was the son of the late Verner Emmett Westbrook and Corrie Hatch Westbrook.
He is survived by his wife Doris Jean Harrup Westbrook; two daughters, Betty Lou Westbrook Gilliland and her husband Robert Gilliland of Arlington and Patricia Westbrook Jenkins and her husband Richard Jenkins of Waverly; son, Walter E. Westbrook and his wife, Gail Ford-Westbrook, of Waverly; a step-daughter, Sandra R. Coleman and her husband, Dr. George Coleman, of Waverly; a step-son, Robert Rogers and his wife, Donna Rogers, of Yale; five grandsons, Cameron Westbrook, Cam Coleman, Austin Westbrook, Sam Rogers, and Casey Rogers; two granddaughters, Jessica Rogers and Carey Coleman; two nephews, P.H. â??Bookieâ? Westbrook and Robert W. â??Bobbyâ? Schultz; and a niece, Susan Westbrook. He was predeceased by his wife, Hester Rogers Westbrook, and six brothers and sisters.
Johnnie was co-owner and operator of Blackwater Farms for 62 years. In 1985 he was appointed to the Virginia Peanut Board by Governor Charles Robb. He served on the Board of Directors of the Peanut Growers Cooperative Marketing Association. Johnnie was a member of the Waverly United Methodist Church where he served on the Board of Trustees and as Chairman of the Finance Committee. He was a past president of the Waverly Ruritan Club, a member of the Beaverdam Sportsman Club, and an honorary member of the Waverly Youth Hunt Club. He served on the Sussex County Board of Supervisors for 32 years, 1964-1976 and 1980-2000, and as Chairman of the Board of Supervisors for many years. He was on the Board of Directors for the Crater Planning District Commission, Appomattox Basin Industrial Development Corporation (ABIDCO), and on the Nominating Committee of the Virginia Association of Counties. Johnnie was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving in the European Theater with the 811th Tank Destroyer Battalion. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart Medal for wounds suffered during the Battle of Luxembourg. He was a member of the England-Parsons American Legion Post #191, Waverly.
Funeral services will be held at Waverly United Methodist Church on Thursday, May 24, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Connie Gibbs officiating. Burial with military rites will follow in the Waverly Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening, 6:00 until 8:00 p.m., at the Purviance Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Homes, Wakefield. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial donations be made to Waverly United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 87, Waverly, VA 23890; Waverly Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 583, Waverly, VA 23890; Waverly Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 318, Waverly, VA 23890; or to the Memorial Fund of Tidewater Academy, P.O. Box 1000, Wakefield, Virginia 23888. The Purviance Chapel of J.T.
