Josephine Burr Feagans

February 23, 1917 — March 6, 2014

Josephine Dorothy Burr Feagans, Age 97, Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother, Army Wife and Volunteer, March 6, 2014. Josephine Dorothy Burr Feagans nee Lodovico passed away quietly at home with her family at her side in Petersburg VA. She had been battling back bravely from a fall when she succumbed to the effects of a resulting stroke. She joined her first husband, Ralph R. Burr, who preceded her in death in 1992. Her second husband, William Feagans, was at her side at the end. She was the daughter of Louis and Rose Lodovico of Atlantic City NJ, where she attended Atlantic City High School. Stage struck at an early age and with a talent to play the piano by ear, she was at the center of the party throughout her life. Her first marriage saw her bring up three boys as her husband moved the family all over the country during WWII. Her love and devotion to her family helped smooth those turbulent years for the boys especially while their father was overseas. When the family moved to Occupied Germany in 1947, she blossomed in the active social life of Heidelberg and with the opportunities to travel Europe. Upon return to Washington DC, she began what would be a life-long commitment to volunteer activities. These continued when they retired to Petersburg. She was active with Ft. Lee, a supporter of the Quartermaster Museum, an active member of the Ft. Lee Founders Club, the Lions Club, and she devoted years to eye testing in the schools. The sadness of losing her first husband was offset by finding the second love of her life, Bill Feagans. Married in May 2001, after both were widowed ten years earlier, she began another wonderful phase of her life. She and Bill were devoted to each other and constantly reached out to their friends. Ever the organizer, she refused to let the increasing number of singles among their friends become recluses. Their “Singles” group traveled and partied often. Though with time her memory began to fade, she never forgot a party date. Her lasting legacy is to always be looking forward and keep in shape for whatever comes. “Use it or lose it” was her motto. She will be remembered by her friends at summer water aerobics and by those who saw her on her treadmill at 96 wearing low heels, because she “...didn’t do sneakers”. She was able to see the marriage of her oldest great grandchild, Captain Thomas Nolta, US Air Force, this past December. She is survived by two of her three sons, Ralph R. Burr of Chagrin Falls, Ohio and Richard E. Burr of San Diego, CA; her husband; her grandchildren: Noel C. Nolta, Deputy Public Affairs, US Air Force of Herndon VA; Kathleen S. Burr, Colonel U.S. Army Reserves of Manassas, VA; Dr. Michael F. Burr, Palmdale CA; Andrew M. Burr, Esq., Auburn, Ohio; Jennifer (Burr) Duffy of San Diego, CA; Geoffrey Burr, San Diego Police Department; Susan (Burr) Wolfe of San Diego; Scott Burr of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; Corrine Burr of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; and 12 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is her second family, Linda Williams, Heath Williams and Kathleen Williams. She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis E.A. Lodovico and Rose Lodovico of Atlantic City, NY; her sister, Helen Lodovico; and her brother, Harry Lodovico, by her first husband, Ralph R. Burr, Sr. and her youngest son, Lawrence J. (Bo) Burr of Chagrin Falls, Ohio. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 am on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 9300 Community Lane, S. Prince George, VA 23805. A Funeral Mass will immediately follow visitation at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Southlawn Cemetery, Prince George.
