Josephine Marie Vaughan Joyner, 87, died on Sunday, December 15, 2024, after a period of declining health. Born and raised in Petersburg, VA, she was the daughter of the late Fannie Ellis and Joseph Clinton Vaughan; and widow of William B. Joyner. She was preceded in death by her older sister, Joyce Evelyn Green Ryder; and her nephew, Wilford J. "Joe" Green, Jr. She was a lifelong member of Wesley United Methodist Church, in Colonial Heights, VA. She was a member of the Chancel Choir, Sunday school, and activity groups.
Josephine was a 1954 graduate of Petersburg High School. After graduation, she began working with The Life Insurance Company of Virginia (now Genworth), where she quickly advanced to Office Manager and retired after 37 years of service. She enjoyed cooking, entertaining, traveling, and music. She sang with the Petersburg Festival Chorus from its inception in 1990 to 2014, and participated on the Board of Directors as Concert Manager.
She is survived by her niece, Joyce Green Dayvault (David); and a nephew, Timothy Augusta Green (Trish); and a niece-in-law, Clestelle P. Green; great-nephews, Matthew Dayvault and Joshua Green; and several great-nieces, Michelle Rierson (Matt), Shelby Tinsley (Charlie), Beth Gardner (Dallas), Emily Staggs (Chris), Mollie Green, and Arlie DeMeo; and numerous great-great-nieces and nephews, and several cousins.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at 12 noon, at the Dinwiddie Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, with the Reverend Raymond McGarr (retired) and the Reverend Terri Swindell, Associate Pastor of Wesley United Methodist Church, in Colonial Heights, VA. Visitation will be held from 11am until 12noon, prior to the funeral service. Interment will follow the service at Southlawn Memorial Park, in Prince George, VA.
The family would like to express our deepest gratitude and appreciation for the loving care and support "Aunt Jo" received during her last few years of declining health from the staff of Dunlop House Assisted Living, At Home Care Hospice, and her very special aide, Edith Smith.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church for their Choir Fund in her memory.
