Joyce Conway “Spike” Maitland, 88, of Sutherland, VA, died Monday, December 11, 2017. Born in Ford, VA, he was the son of the late Algie Wilton and Salonea Lewis Maitland. He was also preceded in death by his wife of more than 50 years, Alice Christopher Maitland. He retired from C & P Telephone after 38 years and nine months of faithful service. A kind and gentle man, Spike was a longtime member of Hawkins Memorial Presbyterian Church, and had a love for trains and animals. Following his retirement, he enjoyed several years as the Southpark Mall train engineer, taking countless children on train rides in the mall. He is survived by his brothers-in-law, Bobby Christopher (Joyce) and Tommy Christopher; sisters-in-law, Patsy Christopher and Marquitta Christopher; devoted caregivers, Gracie Jolly and Randy Roberts. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Crater Community Hospice. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 15, 2017 at the Dinwiddie Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Blandford Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
