William Allen Tyler, Jr., 90, of Waverly passed away on Tuesday, August 3, 2010. He was the youngest son of the late William A. Tyler, Sr. and Linda W. Tyler of Portsmouth. Mr. Tyler was a 1936 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth. After graduation he served as a store keeper and camp bugler with the Civilian Conservation Corps in Appomattox and later apprenticed as a shipfitter at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth for six years before being drafted into the U.S. Navy in 1944. During this time he assisted with the building of the battleship U.S.S. Alabama, and the carrier U.S.S. Shangri-la. Mr. Tyler received an Honorable Discharge in 1946 and pursued interests in a forestry career at Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, graduating in 1950. He started with the Virginia Division of Forestry in Sandston and later became the Assistant District Forester of the Waverly District, where he retired after 33 years of service. He served the community as a charter member of the Waverly Rescue Squad for 34 years. He was a deacon, Sunday school director, teacher, and choir member and choir director at Waverly Baptist Church.
Mr. Tyler is survived by his wife, Beverly Postles Tyler of Waverly; four sons, Hugh Gwynn Tyler and wife, Phyllis of Buckingham, James Stuart Tyler and wife, Nancy of Fairfax, Steven Braxton Tyler and wife, Mimi of Fairfax, and John Christopher Tyler of Waverly; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren; former daughter-in-law, Teresa Tyler and nieces, Joyce Post, Allene Tyler, and Pat McKusick.
The family will receive friends at the Purviance Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Wakefield on Friday, August 6, 2010 from 6 to 8 pm. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, August 7, 2010 at the funeral home with Rev. Randy Hawkins officiating. Burial will follow in Waverly Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Waverly Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 583, Waverly, VA 23890, or to Waverly Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 576, Waverly, VA 23890.
