Robert Drake â??Bobâ? Mitchell, JR, 66, of Norfolk died peacefully Friday at his home, after a brief illness, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Richmond VA on July 21, 1944, he was the son of the late Robert Drake Mitchell SR & Marie Ballas Mitchell. He spent his early years in Northern Virginia.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 46 years, Beulah Cofer Mitchell (orig. of Surry VA); three children, Christine Mitchell Miller of Norfolk, Marie Cofer Davis and her husband Irvin â??Buckâ? Davis JR of Chesapeake and Robert Drake Mitchell III of Norfolk; four grandchildren, Brittany Higgins Webb, Alice Hailey Baillio, Brock Lane Davis & Lance Mitchell Davis; two great grandchildren, Bryce & Miles Webb: a sister, Ellen Thompson and her husband Joe of Mechanicsville; his step-mother, Anita Mitchell of Norfolk & her children Gray, Alex & Grace. Besides his parents, Bob was preceded in death by a granddaughter Ryan Marie Higgins and his in-laws Clyde and Lorraine Cofer of Surry.
Bob graduated from Tidewater Community College, attended Old Dominion University, and was a graduate of the Naval Air Stationâ??s Apprentice School. He worked in Civil Service for 27 years, first as an aircraft engine mechanic and later as logistics manager at the Naval Air Rework Facility at the Norfolk Naval Air Station.
Active in a variety of civic and church organizations, Bob was a Boy Scout leader and Explorer Post advisor for many years, was a committed employee at the Eastern Virginia Medical School Professional Skills Center and was an active member of the Church of the Ascension Episcopal Church, Norfolk. He will be remembered as a man who loved his family and the outdoors. He especially loved the mountains, fishing, sailing and old cars.
A Celebration of Bobâ??s life will be held on Tuesday August 24, 2010 at 10:00 AM at The Church of the Ascension Episcopal Church, Norfolk with Rev. David Davenport, Rev. Samantha Grant-Alexander and Father Constantine Rogakis presiding. Burial, with U. S. Navy Honors will follow at 3:00 PM at Oak Grove Church Cemetery in Surry County. The family will receive friends at The Church of the Ascension in Norfolk on Monday evening from 6:00 â?? 8:00 PM and for a brief reception at the church following the services Tuesday morning. The family would welcome flowers for Bobâ??s service or memorial donations may be sent in his honor to The Church of The Ascension Episcopal Church, 405 Talbot Hall Road, Norfolk, VA 23505. The Purviance Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral home, Wakefield is handling arrangements.
The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation for the many calls visits, prayers and expressions of support from the community during these past difficult weeks and also wishes to issue a special thanks to Sentara Hospice and the Bridge program.
Bob, you will be greatly missed but you will never be far from our thoughts or out of our hearts â?? Your loving family.
