Leonard Ferguson Maxey, Jr., 83, of Hopewell, died Tuesday, July 12, 2005 in John Randolph Medical Center. Mr. Maxey was born in Buckingham County, VA and moved to Hopewell in 1950. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran, having served during WWII. Mr. Maxey was a member of First Baptist Church, was a former member of the Hopewell Optimist Club, Hopewell Kiwanis Club and was chosen Kiwanian of the Year in 1990-91
He was a retired conductor/brakeman for Norfolk & Western Railroad. Mr. Maxey was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard F. & Etta Self Maxey, a sister, Liz Maxey, three brothers, Herbert, Julian and James Maxey. He is survived by his wife, of 55 years, Esther Goffigon Maxey of Hopewell, one son, William Leonard Maxey and his wife Teresa of Chester, one daughter, Marjorie A. Maxey of Crozet, VA, a grandson, A. Hunter Maxey of Chester, two sisters, Mary Maxey Patterson of Dillwyn, VA, Josephine M. White of Windsor, VA, three brothers, Robert Self Maxey of Scottsville, VA, William Agee Maxey of Dillwyn, VA and Frank Henry Maxey of Chatham, VA. The family will receive friends Thursday, July 14, 2005 from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. in the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service.
