J. Kirby Bohannan, Jr., 91, of Hopewell, died Wednesday, May 27, 2009 in John Randolph Medical Center. He was the son of the late J. Kirby Bohannan, Sr. and Essie Mae Labertson Bohannan and the widower of Lucyann Davis Bohannan. Mr. Bohannan served in the U. S. Navy during WWII. Kirby was an active member of the Hopewell Rotary Club until most recently, having served as the president from 1976 through 1977 and received the Paul Harris Fellow award from that organization. He had the distinguished honor of being the only honorary member of the Hopewell-Prince George Chamber of Commerce of which he also served on the board of directors. He was a past president of the Hopewell Retail Merchants Association, a life time member of the Hopewell Historic Foundation, and a member of the Society for the Preservation of Virginia. Kirby was a well known community leader, and an active participant on numerous boards and organizations in the Hopewell area, among them was the Tri-City Literacy Council of which he served as a board member, tutor and past president. Kirby was very active in SCORE, which is an organization of retired executives which counsels new and existing business owners. He was a communicant of St. Johnâ??s Episcopal Church and the retired owner and operator for many years of the Office Supply Company, Inc. which he purchased in 1966. He is survived by his daughter, Judy B. Danilovs and her husband John of Phoenix, AZ, a son, Jay Bohannan of Richmond, VA, a grandson, Colby Bond and his wife Betsy and a great grandson, Ethan Bond, all of Doswell, VA. A graveside service will be held Monday, June 1, 2009 at 11:00 AM in Merchants Hope Memorial Gardens, Prince George, VA with the Rev. Bill Taylor of St. Johnâ??s Episcopal Church officiating.
