Henry Godfrey Alley, Jr., AUS (RET) 241 Bay Colony Drive, passed away January 22, 2010 in Virginia Beach. Born the 23rd of June 1920, in Colonial Heights, VA to the late Henry Godfrey Alley and mother, Maude L. (Rowe) Alley. He attended school in Colonial Heights and graduated from Petersburg High School in 1938. He survived by his loving wife, Ellen Lee England Alley, two of his three children born to their mother Betty Wilson Alley, deceased; Margaret Jane Richardson and Elizabeth Bond Alley of Virginia Beach; son, Henry Godfrey Alley, III, deceased; and eight grandchildren: Elizabeth Kathrynn Alley, Benjamin B. Richardson, III, Alexander W. Richardson, Walker H. Richardson, Jason W. Terpenny ,deceased, Jonathan L. Terpenny, Charles (Hunter) Terpenny, and Haley Lee Terpenny; nephew Jerry C. Harwell, of Chester, VA and niece Mary Virginia Hardee, of Sea Island, GA and three stepsons: Russell Jay Terpenny, Jr., Walter E. Terpenny, and R. Lance Terpenny of Christiansburg, VA. He was commissioned a U.S. Army 2nd Lt. and received his BSME degree from V.P.I. (Virginia Tech). He entered active Army duty March 1943 and in April 1943 joined a mobile anti-aircraft artillery Battalion arriving in England in October 1943. He was in continuous combat duty from Omaha Beach until units were ordered to stop near Berlin for the Russian conquest. He returned to the United States in November 1944. On release from active duty in January 1945, he joined the Army Reserve. He commanded various Army Reserve units in Virginia, the General Gerow Reserve Center at Ft. Lee, VA; retiring at the grade of Colonel with 30 years service in 1972. He worked under Civil Service for over 30 years evaluating service ability of Army equipment. Henry enjoyed membership in a number of varied organizations, Masonic Order, Reserve Officers Association, and Kiwanis Club of Petersburg, then continuing with the Virginia Beach Combers Kiwanis Club. He grew up with membership in St. Paulâ??s Episcopal Church, Petersburg, since moving to VA. Beach he attended Galilee Episcopal Church. All types of sports were enjoyed by him; ocean swimming, sailing, golf plus social dancing and getting together with friends, neighbors and family. He was always avid about getting regular exercise. He will be remembered during the regular 11:00 AM service in Virginia Beach, VA at Galilee Episcopal Church and in Petersburg, VA at St. Paulâ??s Episcopal Church. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at Blandford Cemetery, 319 South Crater Road, Petersburg, VA 23803.
