Olyn LeRoy Stables, Jr., 72, a resident of Waverly for the past 46 years, died Tuesday, October 10, 2006. Born June 18, 1934 in Petersburg, Virginia, he was a son of the late Olyn LeRoy Stables, Sr., and Nellie King Stables. He graduated from Petersburg High School and was a 1989 graduate of Louisiana State University School of Banking. He served in the U. S. Army Reserves and played baritone horn in the 221st Army Band. He was a member of the Waverly United Methodist Church and served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, a member of the choir, and Adult Men's Bible Class teacher for many years. In January 1964 LeRoy was a founding member of the Waverly Volunteer Rescue Squad and served his community faithfully in this organization for 40 years. He had served as Captain and was currently President of the Board of Directors for the squad. He was a cardiac tech for over 30 years and was trained in Advanced Cardiac Life Support. He had been honored as "Squadsman of the Year" several times, and taught CPR and First Aid for the American Red Cross. He served on the Crater Cardiac Council and in 2004 LeRoy received The Regional Award for Outstanding Service in Emergency Medical Services. He was past president of the Waverly Ruritan Club, a member of the Beaverdam and Youth Hunt Clubs, and was on the Board of Directors of the Sussex Service Authority. He retired in 2000 as vice president of the James River Bank, formerly the Bank of Waverly, after 45 years of service.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Brenda Pope Stables; six children, Deborah Matthews of Richmond, Kenneth Stables and wife, Debbie, of Colonial Heights, Ronald Stables, Sr. and wife, Candy, of Waverly, Jennifer Cole and husband, Michael, of Waverly, Scott Stables and wife, Meagan, of Fairfax, and Marci Stables of Waverly; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; two sisters, Barbara Oakley of Petersburg, and Gladys Kennedy and husband, Donald, of Prince George; a brother, Leon Stables and wife, Carolyn, of Matoaca; and brothers and sisters-in-law; Kayda Thornton, Leverette E. Pope, Jr., Mark F. Pope, and Susan P. Irving; and his beloved dog, Samantha. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Geraldine Renn Stables and his beloved father and mother-in-law, Leverette and Eloise Pope.

Funeral services will be held at Waverly United Methodist Church, Waverly, on Friday, October 13, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. with the Rev. Connie Gibbs and the Rev. Randall McMillen officiating. Interment will follow in the Waverly Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, on Thursday evening, 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Waverly Volunteer Rescue Squad, Attn: Jan Harrison, P.O.
