Gordon W. Reed, Jr., 85, of Colonial Heights, Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home with his daughter and son-in-law by his side on October 28, 2009 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, son of the late Gordon Reed, Sr. and Mary Hippensteel Reed. Mr. Reed served with the U.S. Army during WWII; he was awarded two Purple Hearts, expert marksmanship, and also served during the Korean War. He met and married his wife, Maria Massoth, in Bensheim, Germany. They have resided in Colonial Heights since 1958. Mr. Reed retired from the U.S. Army in 1963 and worked at the Defense General Supply Center in Richmond until his retirement. Mr. Reed loved the outdoors. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and tended his garden lovingly throughout his retirement. He is survived by his wife, Maria M. Reed; daughter, Joyce Harville and husband, Wesley of Prince George; son, Gordon Reed and wife, Susan of Chesterfield County; grandchildren, Justin, Erica and Tiffany Harville, and Jeremy Reed; and great-grandchildren, Devan and Desiree Harville. A graveside funeral service will take place on Saturday, October 31, 2009 at 1 p.m. in Sunset Memorial Park, Chester.
