Harry J. Goyne, Jr. â??Junieâ?, a resident of Morningside House of Leesburg, VA died Wednesday, June 29 at Inova Loudoun Hospital. Harry was born on his parentâ??s farm just outside of Chester, Virginia on November 12, 1917. He was the eldest of six children. Harry was an avid outdoorsman and a rugged individualist. He loved all things out of doors - hunting, fishing, hiking, and trapping, his yard and its azaleas and natural plants. He was introduced to beekeeping by his father, Harry Sr. â??Honeybeeâ? and later studied bees at the University of North Carolinaâ??s extension office, receiving a Master Beekeepers certification. He was a former president of the Richmond Beekeepers and, along with his wife, Helen, was active in several beekeeping organizations. He kept bees at his home in Chester for many years, grafting queens, and teaching younger beekeepers, generously sharing his knowledge. In his early years, Harry worked for his uncle, L.R. Goyne and in 1950 he went to work for Virginia Electric and Power Company (now Dominion) at the Chesterfield Power Station. He retired in 1975 as a Shift Supervisor.
Junie was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Chester Station Camp 1503, and the Military Order of the Stars and Bars, George Pickett Chapter, Richmond. He loved the historical sites of the old Howlett Farm, Ware Bottom Spring, and the Trentâ??s Reach section of the James River. Harry worked to see Battery Danzler dedicated as a park and helped the camp build the original observation platform and entrance sign.
Harry is survived by his only son, Michael, his much loved daughter-in-law, Jessie Roth, and grandchildren Caitlyn, Matthew, and Anna, all of Leesburg. He was predeceased by his wife of fifty-seven years, Helen, in 2003. Surviving brothers and sisters include Alvin Goyne of Moneta, VA., Gerald â??Jerryâ? Goyne of Kemah, TX, Marjorie Rickman of Hopewell, VA, and Catherine Douglas of Mooresville, NC. One brother, William â??Billyâ? of Bensley, VA predeceased him.
