Judy Cook Williamson of Dinwiddie was led away peacefully, and hand-in-hand with her Lord on March 2, 2024. As she departed, she was lovingly encircled by her devoted husband and their three children.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Roscoe 'Jack' and Ruby Mitchell Cook. She is survived by her loving husband of sixty-six years, Ashland 'Buddy' Williamson; three children, Bobby Williamson and wife, Sandra, of Dinwiddie, Debbi Williams and partner, Rodney Perkinson, of Dinwiddie, and John Williamson and partner, Craig Sawin, of Massachusetts; her grandchildren, Kaitlyn Williams, of Chester, Clayton Williamson, of Dinwiddie, Evan Williamson, of Sussex; her great-grandson, Tarren Williams, of Chester; and her much-beloved sister, Carolyn Rawlings, of Chesterfield.
Judy was proud to have been raised in Dinwiddie County, and although she spent much of her adult life in Hopewell raising her family, she returned to Dinwiddie in retirement. She was a member of Carson United Methodist Church, where she had earlier been the organist, as she had been for many years previously at Wesley United Methodist in Hopewell.
Early on Judy taught herself to play the piano, and then furthered her talents by becoming a professional organist. She also learned to play the guitar, loved to draw and paint, and enjoyed dabbling in languages as she explored the world with her son. Judy enjoyed adventure, and traveled to places such as Hong Kong, France, the Dominican Republic, Greece, Hawaii, Portugal, and the Holy Land. Along with her husband Buddy, she often could be found on dude ranches out west, riding horses across the peaks of snow-capped mountain ranges and sleeping under the stars. Though she enjoyed far-off destinations, she too was happily found each summer relaxing, and sharing stories with her children and their families on the Outer Banks and the beaches of North Carolina. There wasn't an experience that Judy didn't enjoy or try to seek out in her life (including riding the fastest and most thrilling roller coasters).
Judy also made certain that her adventures were guided by her faith. It was a commitment that she lived by and a faith that she generously shared with friends and family. She was an avid reader, and a reader of the Bible, and began each morning with devotions at the kitchen table. She led Bible studies and workshops, and throughout her life was devoted to growing in the faith that guided her thoughts and actions. A dedicated Christian, she enjoyed and put to use the gifts that the Holy Spirit offered her. She knew that God, and angels, were always present and working with her.
Judy was the kindest of souls, a loving mother, a committed wife, the warmest of hearts, an artist and musician, an intrepid explorer, a dedicated friend who always saw the good in people, a baseball fan, a fantastic cook, the keeper of the family traditions (and recipes), a spiritual confidant, and a sharer of the faith. She was the cornerstone of the family, making certain each member knew where they came from historically, and spiritually, and generously passed on the baton of kindness, warmth, devotion, and the purest forms of love.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts to the Dinwiddie County Historical Society or the Dinwiddie County Fire & EMS.
