Jules Valerin Harvanek (Jake), loving husband, father, and grandfather passed away peacefully Friday, May 28, 2021 following a long illness. He was at home surrounded by his family.
Jake, age 87, was born in Sussex County, Virginia to the late Julius Wesley and Helen Martin Harvanek.
Jake married the love of his life, Barbara Slaughter in Dillon, South Carolina in 1954. During their 67 years of marriage, they resided in Petersburg; then Prince George County, Virginia.
Beginning in 1961, he was the co-owner/operator of Produce Center Supermarkets in Petersburg. Later, he and his son established S&J Farms.
Jules is survived by his wife, Barbara and children Leslie H. Beasley (Vaughn) of St. Johns, Florida and Scotty L. Harvanek (Kim) of Petersburg. He also leaves behind his grandsons; Jacob L. and Preston W. Harvanek.
Other surviving family members include brothers: Edward J. Harvanek, Raymond M. Harvanek (Darlene); sisters: Margaret H. Belcher, Roselyn H. Henshaw, Mildred H. Mulder (Huss), Edith H. Daulton (Vernon); sister-in-law: Linda S. Hall; numerous nieces and nephews, loving caretakers, and many friends.
Jakes was preceded in death by his brothers; George W. Harvanek, Alvin L. Harvanek; sisters: Elsie H. Harrison, Adella H. Swimeler, and brother-in-law: Preston B. Slaughter.
Visitation will take place at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, June 4. A service celebrating his life will be held Saturday, June 5 at 11:00 a.m. at the same location. Interment will follow in Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George.
