Havard, Karen Lewis, 69, passed away on Sunday, April 22, at her home in Waverly. To cherish her memory, she leaves behind her devoted husband of 48 years, William A. (Bill), her loving children, Eric and Ashley (Andy), and her beloved grandchildren, Zoey and Crosby. Karen was born in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, and grew up in West Pittston. She was the daughter of Lewis A. and Kathryn E. Shook and was a sister of Charles E. (deceased) and Kathleen S. Lewis (Tom) of Salisbury, North Carolina. Karen graduated with honors from Wilkes University with a major in chemistry. She was briefly employed by International Paper until she became disabled.
While it is nearly impossible to give an accurate picture of a life in this format, it should be noted that Karen was a beautiful swimmer, a talented person with cross-stitch and yarn, an avid reader and a genuine lover of animals. She truly looked forward to visits from cousins Karen and Skylar and from Ashley, Andy and her wonderful grandchildren. As the years passed (and her disability increased) Karen became entirely housebound and enjoyed a variety of television programs. She took great joy in sharing her crochet creations with school children and hospitals. With gratitude we acknowledge the caring professionalism of Angela Burris whose services contributed to Karen’s ability to remain at home, and to Dr. George Coleman who often went above and beyond to extend medical care. Karen’s family asks that should you want to honor her life with a memorial contribution that you consider the ASPCA or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. An event to celebrate Karen’s life will be held in her hometown at a date to be determined. The family expresses their sincere appreciation for your thoughts and prayers.
