Katherine R. Tereschenko

August 16, 1916 — December 5, 2012

Katherine Remorenko Tereschenko, age 96, of Stony Creek, Virginia, departed this life on Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at her home. She was the daughter of the late Frank and Rosa Remorenko and widow of Leo Max Tereschenko, Sr. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Olga Remorenko, and brother, Frank Remorenko. She is survived by her beloved children, Leo M. Tereschenko, Jr. “Terry” and his wife, Sharon, Kathy Tereschenko Samuels, and her husband Jeff, and Suzanne Tereschenko. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Christopher Tereschenko and his wife, Alecia, Melissa Watson and her husband, Ronnie, Rosa Chrisman, and her husband, Justin; numerous great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews, and many devoted friends. She was a faithful member of Ft. Grove United Methodist Church in Stony Creek, VA, beginning at the age of 10. Mama loved music, and sang in the choir, becoming the choir director, and played the organ in Church every Sunday until her health declined. She also taught Sunday School for many years, from the age of 14. The family wants to especially thank Pastor Dan Armstrong for his faithful visits to the home. She always enjoyed Dan’s visit, and it kept her faith strong. Mama was truly a remarkable woman. She was the young daughter of Russian emigrants, and spoke only Russian when she started school in the United States. However, she quickly learned English, and eventually taught others in her family to speak English as well. She graduated from Stony Creek High School in 1933.
She worked at Johns-Manville during World War II, while her husband, Leo, served in the South Pacific. Mama also worked for the Health Department, and was a Justice of the Peace for the County of Sussex for many years. She also wrote articles for the Richmond Times Dispatch, Progress Index, and Sussex-Surry Dispatch. She was a wonderful Mama and Gran, who loved her family more than anything in the world. She was an avid Atlanta Braves fan, and Miami Hurricanes fan, and watched their games with enthusiasm. Mama was also a formidable tennis player for many years. She was an accomplished cook, and her family members, and others, enjoyed many of her meals. She also enjoyed reading, and knitting, donating many hats to the homeless, and Children’s Cancer Center at VCU. She also refinished furniture, and enjoyed decoupage. The family would like to thank Dr. Michael Matherlee, who provided medical care and frequent phone calls and dedication, and her caregiver, Bernice Potts. We would also like to thank Hospice of Virginia for their compassionate care to our Mother, and our family during her final illness. Funeral services are entrusted to J.T. Morriss & Son, Petersburg, VA. A funeral service will be conducted at Fort Grove United Methodist Church, Stony Creek, Virginia, on Friday, December 7, 2012 at 1:00 PM. Graveside services will be conducted immediately following the service at the Seventh Day Adventist Church Cemetery, Yale, Virginia, where she will be laid to rest beside her husband. Pastor Dan Armstrong will preside. The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Ft. Grove United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 145, Stony Creek, VA 23882 or Hospice of Virginia, 1700 Bayberry Ct., Suite 300, Richmond, VA 23226. Condolences may be registered at www.jtmorriss.com .
