Kathryn Holsclaw Hunter

Kathryn Holsclaw Hunter, 92, a former resident of Hopewell, Virginia, died Thursday, June 20, 2019, at Cedarfield Senior Living Retirement Community in Short Pump, Virginia.
Born in Richmond, Virginia in 1926, she lived in Hopewell from 1930 until moving in 2015 to Cedarfield.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ross R. Holsclaw Sr. and Marie L. Holsclaw; her husband, Roy M. Hunter; two sisters, Frances H. Brown and Elizabeth H. Sierichs; and brother, Ross R. Holsclaw Jr. She is survived by sisters Jean H. Ellison of Jenkintown, Pa. and Ann H. Hughes of Gainesville, Ga.; three children, Susan H. Hicks (Robert) of Mechanicsville, Va., Charles E. Hunter II (Wendy) of Prince George, Va., and Ellen H. Anderson (Greg) of Hopewell, Va.; five grandchildren, Emily H. Jones of Richmond, Va., Kate H. Russell (Brad) of Hampton, Va., Sam Butterworth of Petersburg, Va., Allyson H. Wells (Hunter) of Richmond, Va., and Roy M. Hunter II (Marissa) of Fairfax, Va.; six great grandchildren, Coplan, Sawyer and Merrick Jones, Kathryn and Zeke Russell and Liam and Kai Hunter.
Kathryn graduated from Hopewell High School in 1944 and from the UVA School of Nursing in 1947, she then returned to Hopewell after graduation and worked at Fort Lee’s Kenner Army Hospital as a staff nurse.
After her marriage to Roy in 1951, Kathryn became active in the family business and was the bookkeeper for Hunter Texaco Service Station and later for Hunter Real Estate Agency. She obtained a Real Estate Brokers license in the early 1960’s (one of the first women in Virginia to do so) and was active with the Real Estate Business until it closed in the mid 1990’s. Later in life, she returned to nursing and was a school nurse for the Petersburg General Hospital School of Nursing.
Kathryn served on the Hopewell Redevelopment and Housing Authority for 9 years and was the first woman member as well as the first woman chair of the Authority. She also served on the Hopewell Planning and Zoning Commission for 14 years.
Throughout her adult life Kathryn was active in many civic clubs and organizations. She was a member of the Hopewell Republican Party for many years and served as chair to a number of local & regional campaigns. She was a member and past president of the Appomattox Garden Club, past member of the Hopewell Juniors Woman’s Club, and past member of the Non-Federated Woman’s Club.
Kathryn participated in the Meals for Wheels volunteer organization for many years and worked as a volunteer nurse for the American Red Cross Bloodmobile for 30 years. She also volunteered for many years at television station WWBT 12 where she participated in the Call Twelve news segment.
For relaxation, she was an avid bridge player and was active in bridge clubs throughout her adult life.
At the age of 37, Kathryn decided to take flying lessons. After a few training flights, she soloed an airplane at the Hopewell Airport while her family, safely on the ground, watched.
She was an active member of St. John’s Episcopal Church until moving to Cedarfield in 2015.
A memorial service will be held, Saturday, June 22 at 11 a.m. at the Cedarfield Chapel for the Cedarfield Community, 2300 Cedarfield Parkway Henrico, Virginia. The Rev. Florence Brooks will officiate.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday June 25th at 11 a.m. at Bermuda Memorial Park, Chester, Virginia, The Rev. Fr. James Russell Traylor will officiate.
