Kendell Jay Warren

September 29, 1971 — October 24, 2020

Kendell Jay Warren, 49, of Petersburg, Virginia, passed away October 24, 2020. He was born September 29, 1971, in Wichita, Kansas. The son of Kendell Ray (deceased) and Robin Lynn Warren. On September 23, 1995 he married Angelina (Jantz) Warren. She survives.
Kendell was a 1995 graduate of the University of Kansas (KU), moving to Virginia in 1996. He obtained his Virginia teaching certificate from James Madison University in 1998, and earned his Masters of Education in Administration from Virginia State University in 2018. For 22 years he taught World History and Virginia & U.S. History at Prince George High School (PGHS). He was also the head coach of the PGHS girls’ soccer team for 18 years, achieving a record of 164-8-11, including a district championship in 2013, and district tournament championships in 2013, 2014, and 2016.
Kendell was a member of Chester Presbyterian Church, the Virginia Historical Society, the Kansas Historical Society, the American Historical Association, the Organization of American Historians, the American Battlefield Trust, Wythe County Historical Society, and participated in numerous historical conferences and lectures. He was also an active member in the KU Alumni Association.
Kendell’s passion for history brought him to Virginia, where he spent his life teaching students the importance of learning about the past to help them navigate their futures. He brought enthusiasm, joy, and humor to his classroom, engaging with his students to demonstrate the relevance of the study of history.
As a soccer coach and student of the “beautiful game,” Kendell taught the importance of teamwork and perseverance. He emphasized to all his players the value of reaching beyond themselves to achieve something collectively, as teammates and friends. He believed these character traits, as important as they were on the soccer pitch, would prove beneficial to all his girls throughout their lives.
Above all else, Kendell loved his family, students, and his soccer players.
Survivors include his wife, Angelina, children, Abigail (age 12) and Pierce (age 10); his mother, Robin Warren of Williamsburg; sisters, Tammy (Steve) Evans of Birmingham, AL, Margaret Jo Dodd of Overland Park, KS; brother, Christopher (Jennifer) Warren of Fairfax Station, VA, in-laws Kurt and Susie Jantz of Wichita, KS, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
