Kenneth Mercer Melvin, Jr., 70, of Hopewell, VA passed away on Sunday, May 16, 2021. Born in Petersburg, VA. He was the son of the late Kenneth Mercer Melvin, Sr. and Jean Mahone Melvin; and was also preceded in death by a brother, Matthew Melvin. Mr. Melvin played professional baseball for both the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Kansas City Royals Organizations. He had also played basketball for Prince George High School and held the record for most points scored in a game until that record was beaten by Moses Malone. Ken was retired from UPS after 25 years of dedicated service. From 1980 to 1989 Mr. Melvin owned and operated Rainbow Christian Book Store in Petersburg, VA. He volunteered with several local charities to include City Point Restoration Church and Meals on Wheels and was an avid supporter of the Wounded Warrior Project and Hope21 Ministries. He is survived by his loving wife, Brenda Williamson Melvin; two sons, Jared and Jonathan Melvin; two brothers, Tom Melvin and wife Cindi, and John Melvin and wife, Becky; a brother-in-law, Bruce Williamson; special friends, Kenny Bilyard and his ball team friends; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 24, 2021 at City Point Restoration Church with the Reverends Thurman Collier and Mike Buckley, officiating. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. the day of the service at the church. The service will also be livestreamed and may be viewed by visiting City Point Restoration Church in Hopewell on Facebook. The family is being served by the Hopewell Chapel of J.T.
