Lawrence Cleveland Powell, 78, a longtime resident of Dinwiddie County, passed away Monday, October 6, 2014. Born in Clarksville, VA, he was the son of the late William Edgar and Nannie Lee Williamson Powell. After retiring from the A & P Tea Company, Lawrence became a partner in Dinwiddie Supermarket, where he spent the remainder of his career. He had a lifelong passion for farming, from raising tobacco in his younger years, to raising a backyard vegetable garden in more recent years. He also had a love for bluegrass music which inspired him to learn to play the dobro several years ago. Lawrence was a member of Monumental Baptist Church and a longtime member of Dinwiddie Lodge No. 136 A.F. & A.M. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Archer Powell; step-daughter, Sharon Lackie Wessel; siblings, Thomas Powell, Bernice Wright, Ida Thomasson and Joseph Powell. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Lackie-Powell; son, William Lawrence Powell and wife, Gladys; daughter, Becky Powell Morris and husband, Dickie; grandchildren, Brandon Scott Williams; step-son, Glenn P. Lackie; step-grandchildren, Sheena Bowen, Chelsi Morris, Jacob Morris, Korey Wessel, Cailin Wessel Martin and Kyler Wessel; great-grandchild, Kyleigh Weaver. A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Friday, October 10, at Monumental Baptist Church, with Pastor Barry Ginn officiating. Interment with Masonic Rites will follow at Southlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Petersburg Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home.
