Lawrence Grant Mathews, Sr., DDS passed away on July 1, 2009 at the age of 92. He was born in Atlanta, Ga., Oct. 13, 1916 to Bessie and Chesley Mathews. He was raised in Huttig, Ark., and Deltaville, VA. by his Uncle Frank and Aunt Bessie Scott. A 1939 graduate of VMI he served as a Major in the Army Air Corps for 4 years in the South Pacific during WWII. He graduated from MCV Dental School in 1950 and opened one of the first family dental offices in Chesterfield. He practiced from 1950 to 2000 and retired at the age of 83. He celebrated 64 years of marriage to his wife, Evelyn Engleman Mathews, in June. He is also survived by his children Carol Ray, Bett Randolph, Larry Mathews, Jr., and his wife Carla. Also surviving are his grandchildren Scott Rash, wife Stacy, and great-grandchildren Austin and Brandon; Rob Westbrook and wife Martha; Diana Mathews, Elizabeth Westbrook, Grant Mathews, and Christopher Ray. His surviving siblings are Frank Mathews, of Dequincy, LA. , and Betty Swift of Atlanta. Visitation will be held on Mon., July 6 from 6-8 p.m. at J.T.Morriss Funeral Home, Chester; a service celebrating his life will be held at St. Johnâ??s Episcopal Church, Chester at 10 a.m. Tues. July 7 with committal service and interment following at Sunset Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to a charity of your choice to honor Larry Mathews.
