Leenora V. Everett

LeeNora V. Everett, age 88, a retired award winner journalist and former Dinwiddie County elected officer, died Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at her residence. She served as a reporter for the Richmond Times Dispatch, Petersburg News Bureau for 20 years covering the Tri-cities and several Southside Virginia counties. Following retirement in 1988, her column “This and That” was a regular feature in the Southside Virginia News. Earlier in her career, she was a reporter for the Petersburg Progress-Index and the Brunswick Times Gazette. Ms. Everett was a past president of Virginia Press Women and a recipient of its “Press Woman of the Year” and “Woman of Achievement” awards. In 1987 she was Director of the National Press Womans 50th annual conference at Colonial Williamsburg. Offering us a political candidate in 1991, she was the first woman elected to the Dinwiddie County Board of Supervisors. She served two, four year terms and twice was elected board chairman. She represented the county on the Crater Planning District Commission and was a past chairman of the regional body. She also served on regional transportation and industrial development agencies. Ms. Everett was a native of Longmont, Colorado and a graduate of Colorado Woman’s College. She was preceded in death by her parents Flake M. and Olivia Vickery and her husband Lancelot Perry Everett, who died in 1981. Survived by her son and two daughters: Lance (Anne) Everett of Stony Creek, Debra E.(Ron) Linkous of Chester and Olivia L. Everett of Petersburg. Also two grandsons, Chris (Amy) Everett and Randy(Melissa) Everett, of Stony Creek and two grand daughters Veronica and Nora Linkous of Chester, seven great grand children Regan, Laine, Natalie, Bryce,Lexi, Jake and Addison from Stony Creek and a niece and two nephews from Ahoskie North Carolina. She was affectionately known as Mema and was a person who gave ever so much and thought of herself last. Ms. Everett was an elder and a member of Second Presbyterian Church. She in past years, served as worship chairman, was active in Presbytery of the James and in 1990 was part of a group Presbytery ministers and lay leaders who traveled to El Salvador and Nicaragua. She also served on the editorial Board of the Denominations Presbyterian Survey Magazine, Louisville, Kentucky. In addition to professional and church activities she loved politics, painting, flower gardening, scrabble, cooking and baking, vacationing at Myrtle Beach and doted on her family activities.
