Leona Childress Whelan

Leona Childress Whelan, 95, of Chester, passed away on Friday, November 11, 2016. She was the daughter of the late, Walter and Hattie Crostic Childress. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John M. Whelan, Sr.; three brothers, Frank G. Childress, Thomas L. Childress and Walter D. Childress; three sisters, Thelma Wade, Margaret Mannerburg and Lucille Tatum. Leona was a member of Kenwood United Methodist Church. She was a Super Senior and a member of the Young At Heart group. She is survived by her daughter, Carol Thomasson (Robert McAdams); son, John M. Whelan, Jr. (Deanie); three grandchildren, Keith Whelan (Lisa), Troy Whelan (Donna), and Kim Sloan (Kyle); and six great-grandchildren, Jordan Whelan, Jenna Whelan, Julia Whelan, Jaden Whelan, Carter Sloan, and Chloe Sloan. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M., on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Southlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M., on Friday, November 18, 2016.
