Mrs. Etta â??Leoraâ? Harrell Murphy Spain, wife of the late Richard Samuel Spain, Jr. of Petersburg, VA, died Friday, June 19, 2009 in the comfort of her home. Mrs. Spain was born on February 24, 1921 in Norfolk, VA, the daughter of Annie Elizabeth Morgan Harrell Parker of Chowan, NC and Wilson Barclay Harrell of Eastlake, NC, and resided in Petersburg, VA for more than 50 years, relocating over the last 17 years with family to Hanover, Williamsburg, and Goochland, VA.

Mrs. Spain enlisted in the U. S. Coast Guard on August 11, 1943, and after being stationed in Palm Beach, FL and Headquarters, Washington, D. C., was honorably discharged in January 1946. Prior to enlisting, Leora was employed at the Naval Air Supply Station in Norfolk, VA. Upon leaving the Coast Guard, Leora relocated to Petersburg, VA where she held employment with Thalhimerâ??s of Richmond, VA and Wiceâ??s Clothing of Petersburg. She spent the remaining 60 years of her life as a dedicated homemaker. Leora was a charter member of the Prince George Lioness Club, where she served on the board of directors. She volunteered with the Prince George Department of Social Services, the Special Olympics Program, and served on the Board of the Petersburg Association for Retarded Citizens as well as volunteering in numerous other capacities.

Mrs. Spain is survived by her children, Vernon Lee Murphy and wife, Hatsuko Murphy of Jacksonville, NC, Vanessa Spain Perdue and husband, Russell R. Perdue, Jr. of Goochland, VA, Richard Samuel Spain, III and wife, Sharon Lopresti Spain of Prince George, VA, and William Royal Spain of Goochland, VA; her grandchildren, Mitsu Murphy, William Murphy, Sherman Murphy, and Alice Murphy all of North Carolina, Kara Anne Perdue of Goochland, VA, Keely Elisa Perdue of Clemson, SC, Grayson Cole Spain of Prince George, VA; great-grandson, Christopher Aiden Beville of Goochland, VA.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, June 23, at Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg with Rev. Pete Lopresti officiating. Condolences may be registered at www.jtmorriss.com .
