Lewis Franklin Bowen Sr., 86, of Hopewell, Virginia passed away on the evening of July 2, 2017 surrounded by his loved ones. He was preceded in death by his parents, Algie and Mildred Bowen; brothers, Carlton Bowen, Amos Bowen; sister-in-law Rachel Bowen; brother-in-law Willie Prince; daughter-in-law, Faidra Vasilos-Bowen; and grandson Matthew Higgins. Lewis was born July 4, 1930 in Virgilina, Virginia. He served in the United States Army from 1951to 1957. During this time, he served in the Korean War. After serving he moved to Hopewell, Virginia with his family in 1962. He worked many years at Burton P. Short as a heavy equipment operator and mechanic where he retired. He was a member of the American Legion, the Fraternal Order of Police, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, blue grass music, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Lucy Ware Lawless Bowen; children, Lewis F. Bowen Jr., Janie Jones, Lonnie Bowen, and Frances Higgins (Bill); step-children, Susan Pron (Mike), Gloria Lowry (Curtis), Brenda Jessie (Larry), and Stephen Lawless; siblings, Lois Jackson, Eva Prince, Gray Bowen (Audrey), Junie Bowen, Ike Bowen and sister-in-law Joan Bowen; 14 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, and other extended family and friends. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 7, 2017 at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home and Cremation Service. A funeral service will be held at 11am on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at funeral home with interment to follow in Appomattox Cemetery. Condolences may be registered at
