Liebert E. Hawkins of Colonial Heights, formerly a lifelong resident of Ettrick, passed away Friday, May 6, at Southside Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health. Mr. Hawkins was a veteran of World War II and served in both the United States Navy and Navy Reserve. At the time of his death, he was an active charter member of Ettrick Post No. 136, American Legion for over fifty years. Previous to his membership in the Ettrick Post, he was a member of Colonial Heights Post 284, American Legion, having been one of the two remaining charter members. He was owner and operator of L. E. Hawkins, General Contractor, until his retirement and a former member of the Ettrick Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Hawkins served as the first president of the Matoaca High School Booster?s Club. He served on the Virginia Tech Student Aid Association Board of Directors for several years and was an active member of the Tri-Cities Area Hokie Club. He was a member of Ettrick United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marie B. Hawkins of Colonial Heights; a son, Sterling L. Hawkins of Colonial Heights; one brother, William W. Hawkins and wife, Mary of Ettrick; and a niece, Brenda Ollie of Orange Beach, Alabama. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 PM Monday, May 9, at the Chesterfield Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service. A graveside funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday at Blandford Cemetery with the Rev. Herndon P. Jeffreys, III and the Rev. James Blankenship officiating.
