Lillian Marie Hammond

Lillian “Lil” Marie Hammond, 90, died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, October 15, 2014, at Brighter Living in Hopewell, Virginia after a battle with Alzheimer’s. Born in Green Island, Canada on April 23, 1924, Lil was the youngest of twelve children of the late Samuel and Helen LaFrance and grew up in Nashua, New Hampshire. After twenty-three years exploring the world as an Army wife, beginning in Massachusetts to California, Japan, Alabama, North Carolina, New Jersey, Germany, and finally Virginia, where she settled in Dinwiddie County in 1964. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grand-mère and grande grand-mère. One of Lil’s passions was roller skating and she competed and won numerous awards in the US Southeastern Region of the US Amateur Confederation of Roller Skating during the 70’s and 80’s. Lillian was also active in state and local politics as a supporter of the National Republican Congressional Committee. She worked on election campaigns for President Ronald Reagan, Vice President George H. Bush, and Senator John Warner. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, I. Lloyd Hammond. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her sons: Richard and wife Eleanor, Robert, and Roger and wife Deborah; her grandchildren: LeeAnn and husband Brian, Richard, Todd and wife Julia, Christopher and wife Christina, Jeffery and wife Angela, and Melissa and husband Butch; five great-grandchildren: Kevin, Dean, Angelena, Elizabeth, and Jackson; and her sister, Irene Berube of Florida. The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Monday, October 20, 2014 at the Chester Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, 3050 W. Hundred Road, Chester, VA, with a funeral service to begin at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Bermuda Memorial Park, 1901 Bermuda Hundred Road, Chester, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, D.C. 20090-6011. Condolences may be registered online at www.jtmorriss.com .
